1. Size it for your group
Barrels are sold by how many people they seat, usually 2 to 4, 4 to 6 or 6 to 8. Longer barrels add bench length and often a changing room or porch. Pick for the group you’ll have most weeks, not the biggest party, since a bigger barrel takes longer to heat.
2. Choose the wood
- Thermo-treated spruce or aspen: heat-treated for stability and low upkeep outdoors. SaunaLife and Finnmark build their barrels from thermo-spruce; Finnmark uses 40 mm walls.
- Cedar: aromatic and naturally decay-resistant, usually at a higher price.
- Pine: the budget option.
3. Pick the front and windows
Solid fronts hold heat best. A full glass front or a rear window brings in light and the view; a porch or canopy keeps snow and rain off the door. Combination barrels add infrared panels alongside a traditional heater.
4. Size the heater to the barrel
Barrel volume is 3.14 × (diameter ÷ 2)² × length, in feet. A barrel 6 ft across and 6 ft long holds about 170 cubic feet. Glass adds load, so count about 4 cubic feet for each square foot of glass. Finnmark typically recommends 6 to 9 kW electric heaters for its barrels.
- Electric: needs a dedicated 240 V circuit run from the house. Electrical requirements.
- Wood-burning: outdoor only, needs a chimney kit, no power needed.
Run your barrel through the heater calculator.
5. Prepare the base
Never set a barrel on grass or soil. Finnmark recommends 100 to 150 mm (about 4 to 6 in) of compacted crushed stone or gravel, or pavers, a concrete pad or treated decking. Barrels also sit well on pier blocks under each cradle. Outdoor sauna planning.
6. Plan the build and the upkeep
- Assembly takes two people; SaunaLife rates its Ergo Elegance barrels at one day for two people.
- After each use: wipe the benches and leave the door open to dry.
- Every 6 to 12 months: oil the benches and interior walls.
- Every year: treat the exterior, check the roof and tighten the bands.
